Maintain a balanced Wheel of Life & Don't go blindly behind 70 hour work week.

Balanced Wheel of Life. Say NO 70 Hour Work Week

Mr. Narayan Murthy’s recent social media post, advocating for young Indians to work 70 hours a week to propel the country’s economic potential, has sparked a debate on the delicate balance between ambition and productivity.

Multiple viewpoints on this matter emerge – there are supporters of hard work, there is concern for well-being, people are debating on the quality vs quantity of work. Some talk about flexibility and that each individual should be given a choice to make a decision as the 70-hour work week has direct impact on physical and mental health of an individual. It also impacts the social well-being, as humans we are deeply knitted into the fabric of society. Let’s delve into each of these aspects:

Impact on Physical Health:  Extended working hours can lead to extreme fatigue increasing the risk of:

  1. Sleep Deprivation – Long work hours often result in insufficient sleep, leading to various health issues, including impaired cognitive function and increased susceptibility to illnesses.
  2. Cardiovascular Problems – Prolonged stress and inadequate rest can contribute to heart problems, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of heart attacks.
  3. Sedentary Lifestyle – Less time for exercise or physical activity can result in a sedentary lifestyle, which is associated with obesity and related health concerns
  4. Nutrition Issues – Eating outside food everyday can lead to various health and lifestyle issues – poor nutrition, weight gain, digestive issues, etc. When someone works for 14 hours a day, it is inevitable that atleast one meal will be from outside.

Impact on Mental Health: Limited time for relaxation, hobbies, and social activities can impact overall life satisfaction and happiness.

  1. Burnout – Excessive work hours can lead to burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion, reduced performance, and a sense of cynicism. It is linked to depression and anxiety.
  2. Cognitive Impairment – Sleep deprivation and stress can impair cognitive function, leading to reduced decision-making abilities and creativity.
  3. Stress and Anxiety – Extended work hours often lead to high levels of stress and anxiety. The pressure to meet deadlines and perform at a consistently high level can create a constant state of stress, which may manifest as generalized anxiety. This can lead to feelings of unease, restlessness, and apprehension
  4. Depression – Prolonged periods of overwork can contribute to depression. Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyed activities are common symptoms of depression.
  5. Irritability and Mood Swings – Constantly long working hours can make individuals more irritable and prone to mood swings. The lack of time for relaxation and personal life can exacerbate these emotional fluctuations.

Impact on Social Health: The most direct impact is the limited availability of time to spend with friends, family, and loved ones. Extended work hours can leave very little time for socializing and maintaining relationships.

  1. Strained Relationships – The lack of time for social interaction can lead to strained personal relationships. Friends and family may feel neglected or frustrated by the individual’s absence.
  2. Inability to Pursue Personal Interests – Pursuing personal interests and passions outside of work may be compromised, which can limit opportunities to meet new people and make friends who share common interests.
  3. Diminished Social Support – Social support is essential for emotional well-being. A lack of time for social interactions can deprive individuals of the support network that helps them navigate life’s challenges.
  4. Neglected Responsibilities – Maintaining a home, taking care of household chores, and fulfilling familial responsibilities can become more challenging when working long hours, affecting family dynamics.

In the context of a 70-hour work week, the "Wheel of Life" concept underscores the need for balance across various life dimensions. Such extensive working hours can disrupt the equilibrium between career, health, relationships, and personal well-being. It’s essential to assess how these long hours impact physical and mental health, strain social connections, and influence emotional well-being.

Maintaining a balanced wheel of life ensures that career aspirations are harmonized with other crucial life aspects, contributing to a well-rounded and fulfilling life.
