Breaking Chains: Express & Embrace Your Emotions

There is a classic poem by “Shel Silverstein” on the theme of expressing emotions called ‘Masks”.

She had blue skin,
And so did he. 
He kept it hid, 
And so did she. 
They searched for blue, Their whole life through,
then passed right by – And never knew.

This short poem touches on the idea of people hiding their true emotions or selves behind metaphorical masks. It conveys the missed connections, when you don't express your authentic feelings. 

Despite human evolution and progress of our society over many centuries, expressing your emotions or feelings openly is still looked down upon, moreover it is looked as a feminine trait. Due to which the human race has consciously learnt to suppress their emotions without understanding the deep impact on one’s physical and mental health.

The suppression of emotions can have a profound impact on both physical and mental health. While emotions are a natural part of the human experience, attempting to suppress or ignore them can lead to a range of negative consequences.

 Impact on Physical Health:

  • Increased Stress Levels – Suppressing emotions, particularly negative ones, can lead to increased stress levels. The body’s stress response, including the release of cortisol and activation of the sympathetic nervous system, may become heightened in the long term.
  • Cardiovascular Issues – Chronic emotional suppression has been associated with cardiovascular issues, including hypertension and an increased risk of heart disease. Prolonged stress can contribute to the development and exacerbation of cardiovascular conditions.
  • Weakened Immune System – There is evidence to suggest that the chronic suppression of emotions may weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to illnesses and infections
  • Muscle Tension and Pain – Emotional suppression can contribute to increased muscle tension, which may lead to chronic pain, headaches, and other physical discomforts.
  • Digestive Problems – Emotional stress and suppression have been linked to digestive issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), indigestion, and other gastrointestinal problems.

 Impact on Mental Health:

  • Increased Risk of Mental Health Disorders – Research indicates that emotional suppression is associated with an increased risk of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Intensification of Negative Emotions – Instead of resolving emotions, suppression can intensify negative feelings over time. Unexpressed emotions may build up and contribute to a sense of emotional burden.
  • Interpersonal Difficulties – Emotional suppression can strain relationships, as unexpressed emotions may result in misunderstandings, communication breakdowns, and a lack of emotional intimacy.
  • Reduced Emotional Awareness – Suppressing emotions may lead to reduced emotional awareness, making it challenging for individuals to understand and navigate their own feelings.
  • Negative Impact on Self Esteem – Chronic emotional suppression can contribute to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. The inability to express oneself authentically may lead to a sense of disconnection from one’s true identity.

Expressing emotions in a healthy and constructive manner is crucial for mental well-being and positive relationships. 

Some effective ways to let out emotions without causing harm to you and others:

  • Practice Self- Compassion: Be kind to yourself and recognize that experiencing emotions is a natural part of being human. Treat yourself with the same compassion you would offer a friend
  • Seek Professional Help: If your emotions feel overwhelming or persistent, consider seeking the guidance of a mental health professional. They can provide support, strategies, and a safe space for expression

Remember that everyone is unique, and finding the right strategies for expressing emotions may involve a degree of trial and error. It’s essential to prioritize self-care, seek support when needed, and choose methods that resonate with your individual preferences and personality.
